While global headlines focus on bitcoin prices and institutional trading desks, millions of Filipinos are using cryptocurrency for a much simpler, everyday purpose: sending money back home to their families.

According to the 2026 Geography of Crypto Report by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, up to 10% of inbound remittances to the Philippines are now settled using stablecoins, which are digital tokens pegged to foreign fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar.

Is this the future of remittances to the Philippines?

The Real-World Friction Stablecoins Solve

Sending money to the Philippines from overseas has, for the longest time, meant high wire transfer fees, bank processing delays, and exchange rate markups.

Nichel Gaba, founder and CEO of the Philippine Digital Asset Exchange (PDAX), noted in the report that major remittance players are taking notice.

“All the major remittance companies have initiatives to do stablecoin settlement into the Philippines.”

Because stablecoins operate on public blockchains, payments can settle nearly instantly at a fraction of traditional banking costs. For Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) sending money home in smaller, frequent increments, those saved fees mean more funds reaching their families.

Outperforming the Global Average in Everyday Utility

The findings highlight a distinct pattern in how Southeast Asia uses digital assets compared to the rest of the world. While financial hubs like Singapore and Australia dominate institutional trading, emerging markets in Southeast Asia lead in practical utility. Together, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam accounted for 14.4% of all global small-value peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers (transactions under $10,000) during the 12-month reporting period.

What makes that number striking is that the three countries combined represent just 2.5% of the total global crypto economy.

Key metrics from the report underline this utility-driven focus:

  • Small transaction sizes: Over 80% of domestic transfers across the trio were under $1,000.
  • Average transfer value: The average P2P transfer size in these countries was $618, compared to $1,210 for the rest of the world.
  • Cross-border dominance: Cross-border stablecoin activity exceeded domestic stablecoin usage across every analyzed market in the region, with cross-border flows measuring 3.2 times higher overall.

Why Domestic Systems Don’t Stop Cross-Border Growth

Interestingly, domestic stablecoin usage in the Philippines remains small compared to cross-border flows. Chainalysis experts point out that local digital payment rails, such as GCash, Maya, and InstaPay, already offer fast and cheap instant payments domestically.

Where local banking rails fall short is international transfers. By connecting international remittance providers to local crypto exchanges and digital wallets, stablecoins act as a back-end settlement layer that cuts out intermediary correspondent banks.

As Chainalysis observed across the region, 2026 marks a broader transition for digital assets: moving away from speculative trading assets toward becoming core financial infrastructure. For millions of Filipino families receiving support from abroad, that infrastructure is already yielding practical benefits.
