HSBC Reaches 50K Users After Launch
HSBC has reached a milestone in its digital asset business, with Redcoin, its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, expanding its use through bank retail channels.
SCMP reported that during a panel at the Hong Kong Fintech Week conference, HSBC group CEO Georges Elhedery disclosed that Redcoin had reached 50K users just over a week after it was launched, a goal that Elhedery commented was possible due to the comfortable regulatory environment provided by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA).
HSCB is one of two companies the HKMA licensed to issue Hong Kong dollar stablecoins; Anchorpoint, a consortium led by Standard Chartered, also received HKMA approval.
While Elhedery expressed satisfaction with the reception Hong Kong retail audiences gave Redcoin, he stressed that the bank aims much higher with this initiative.
“Of course, our target is multimillion users. But it just shows one can scale some of these features when the technology is sound and safe, and when the regulatory environment is also there and safe,” he declared.
In its first launch phase, Redcoin is available through Payme, HSBC’s payment app, giving the stablecoin a user base of 3.3 million that can leverage it to make payments at nearly 100K merchants and complete peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions in Hong Kong.
But the bank has announced that it aims for Redcoin to become a pivotal part of its digital strategy, available through its banking app to open the doors for tokenized investment products in the future.
Maggie Ng, CEO of HSBC Hong Kong, said the bank was encouraged by the adoption levels reached by Redcoin since its launch. “Merchant payments and wallet top-ups are already live, and we are encouraged by early customer usage. This is how digital currency becomes part of daily life in Hong Kong,” she assessed.
Nonetheless, Anchorpoint is also taking steps to position its HKDAP stablecoin as a competitor, targeting public blockchains for its eventual deployment. The company recently entered into a strategic partnership with the Solana Foundation, which includes support for native minting and redemption of HKDAP on the Solana blockchain with near-instant settlement speeds, and access to HKDAP-enabled tokenised products on Solana.
